Will the new cooktop fit the kitchen and its electrical supply?
- Check the manufacturer's cut-out and clearance requirements, not just the advertised width.
- Arrange the electrical feasibility assessment before purchasing.
- Plan the sequence of electrical, gas, cabinetry and benchtop work.
Match the installation drawing to the kitchen
Two cooktops with the same advertised width can have different installation requirements. The Victorian Government's buyer guide distinguishes the outside dimensions from the benchtop cut-out and recommends checking feasibility with an electrician before purchase. Obtain the installation document for the exact model you are considering.
Give the installer photographs of the existing cooktop, nearby cabinets and the cupboard or appliance beneath it. Ask who will verify the opening, required clearances and any effect on drawers or the oven. Do not order a benchtop alteration from the marketing dimensions alone.
Have the electrical requirements assessed for that model
Supply the cooktop's electrical specification alongside the model number. Ask the electrician to assess the existing supply, circuit route, protective equipment and any switchboard work needed for the proposal. An outlet used by the old appliance does not establish the suitability of the new arrangement.
Include other planned changes, such as an oven replacement or additional air conditioning, so they can be considered together. Ask the quote to distinguish necessary electrical work from optional future preparation. Do not assume a full switchboard replacement is required, or assume that none is needed, before the assessment.
- Exact model and installation document
- Existing benchtop and cupboard arrangement
- Proposed circuit route and electrical work
- Other kitchen appliances being changed at the same time
Assign responsibility for the changeover
When replacing a gas cooktop, arrange appropriately qualified gas work to disconnect and make the old supply safe. Ask who coordinates that work with the electrician and any cabinetry or benchtop trade. The appliance should not be removed before the sequence and responsibilities are understood.
Record who supplies the cooktop, who disposes of the old one, who finishes surrounding surfaces and what happens if the existing opening differs from the measured plan. For a kitchen used daily, agree how the household will manage the period between removal and completed installation without assuming a fixed turnaround.
Check everyday use as well as installation
Before settling on a model, compare the arrangement of cooking zones with the pans and cooking tasks you use most. Ask the retailer to explain controls, cleaning requirements and the manufacturer's cookware guidance. Include accessibility needs such as visibility of controls and how easily the user can reach them.
At handover, ask for the installation documentation and a demonstration of normal controls. Keep the model, serial number and installer details with the kitchen records.
