    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

West Footscray is a mix of established houses, units and newer townhouses, set along residential streets around Barkly Street with the railway and employment precincts close by. In established streets like these, a lot of electrical, heating and cooling work starts with a renovation: a kitchen moved to the back of the house, a wall taken out, gas appliances swapped for electric ones. That's the right time to plan wiring, lighting and heating or cooling as one scope rather than three separate jobs. Total Comfort is one local team for all three, based in Altona Meadows, and you get the price before we start.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in West Footscray

    Established houses mid-renovation

In an established house, the wiring has usually been added to more often than it has been replaced. Open up a wall or ceiling and it's common to find old cable runs, joins buried in the roof space and circuits stretched well past what they were designed to carry. Energy Safe Victoria says the wiring should be checked if a house was built more than 30 years ago, and the Wiring Rules call for additional safety switch protection in an existing installation when alterations are made. We check the circuits you're keeping before the plasterer closes everything up.

    Units in older walk-up blocks

Units in older walk-up blocks usually have the meters grouped in a common area and a small switchboard inside each unit, often with little spare room. Adding a split system or an electric oven means checking that board, the cable back to the meter and what the owners corporation allows on the outside wall. Some older units still rely on a gas wall heater. Energy Safe Victoria says open-flued gas heaters can spill carbon monoxide more easily than other types, and that renovating or weather-sealing around one may alter the ventilation needed to clear it, so have a licensed gasfitter check the heater after new windows or draught-proofing.

    Newer townhouses

Townhouses on subdivided lots usually come with a modern switchboard and safety switches, along with builder-grade fittings: a grid of basic downlights, one power point where you wanted three and very little outdoor power. Those are straightforward upgrades. Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have smoke alarms connected to 240V mains power with a backup battery, and a hard-wired alarm must be installed by a qualified electrician. Anyone can change a smoke alarm battery, but replacing the alarm itself is a job for a licensed electrician.

Heating and cooling in West Footscray

Heating here tends to follow the last renovation. Older houses often still have gas ducted heating or a gas space heater, with a split system added in the living area for summer. Renovated homes usually move to reverse-cycle, either split systems room by room or a ducted system in the roof space. Opening up rooms changes the load, because one large open-plan area needs different sizing from the three small rooms it replaced. Victorians typically use more energy for heating than cooling, so compare heating efficiency first.

    Local notes

Part of the City of Maribyrnong

West Footscray is one of nine suburbs in the City of Maribyrnong, a council area on the Maribyrnong River about 4 km west of central Melbourne. Renovation paperwork comes from more than one place, and the electrical side has its own: whenever a licensed electrician completes electrical installation work, they must provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety. Ask for it, and keep it with the plans and the builder's documents.

Supply, capacity and who owns what

Jemena's published supply area runs from Gisborne South, Clarkefield and Mickleham in the north to Williamstown and Footscray in the south, and west to Hillside, Sydenham and Brooklyn. Energy Safe Victoria says the point of supply is where the network hands over to your installation, and from there the property owner is responsible for maintenance and repair. When a renovation adds induction cooking and more air conditioning, supply matters too: an older home may need a larger single-phase supply, or a three-phase upgrade where the total load is high.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

Before the builder locks in the kitchen layout, if you can. Appliance choices decide the circuits, and an induction cooktop or a second oven can change what the switchboard needs. After that there are usually two visits: rough-in, while the walls and ceilings are open, and fit-off, once the plaster and paint are done. A floor plan marked with power points, lights and appliances makes both visits simpler.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
