    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Total Comfort is based in Altona Meadows, so this is home ground for our family-run team. The suburb is mostly brick veneer houses built from the 1970s through the 1990s, with units and newer townhouses on subdivided blocks. Much of the work in homes of this age comes back to one question: can a house wired for an electric stove, a few lights and a gas heater carry what people want now, such as reverse-cycle air conditioning, an induction cooktop or a car charger? We look at the switchboard first, then give you a fixed price for the agreed scope.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Altona Meadows

1970s and early 1980s brick veneers

The oldest houses here are well past the 30-year mark at which Energy Safe Victoria says wiring should be checked. Many still have their first switchboard: rewireable ceramic fuses or early circuit breakers, sometimes with a safety switch added later on the power circuits and nothing on the lights, oven or hot water. The cabling is usually plastic-sheathed and often in fair order. The trouble is decades of extra points, outdoor lights and appliance circuits squeezed onto a board that was never laid out for them.

    Late 1980s and 1990s homes

Houses from this stretch usually came with circuit breakers and a gas ducted heater in the roof, with vents in the floor or ceiling. What they rarely have is safety-switch protection on every circuit, which the Wiring Rules require once a switchboard is replaced. Smoke alarms are worth checking too. Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have alarms wired to 240V mains with a backup battery, while older homes may have battery-powered alarms, so the build date matters.

Units and townhouses on subdivided blocks

Safety switches are compulsory on new residential installations, so the switchboards in the newer dwellings are usually modern. The constraint is space. Outdoor air-conditioning units compete with bins, side paths and a neighbour's bedroom window, and a low roof may leave little room for ducts. In these homes the choice is usually between wall splits, a multi-head system or a slim bulkhead unit, and we settle unit positions for airflow, drainage and service access before anything is ordered.

Heating and cooling in Altona Meadows

Gas ducted heating was the standard fit when most Altona Meadows homes were built, and many still run the original heater or its first replacement. Cooling usually arrived later, as a wall split in the living room or an evaporative unit on the roof. Reverse-cycle is now the common replacement for both. Victorians use more energy heating than cooling, so we compare heating efficiency first, and we check the switchboard before a new system goes in.

    Local notes

    Council and electricity network

Altona Meadows is one of the suburbs of Hobsons Bay City. Powercor's planning report lists it among the areas supplied from Altona Terminal Station (West). Energy Safe Victoria says fallen or unsafe powerlines and damaged or leaning poles go to your local distribution company, which here means Powercor rather than an electrician.

The newer end of Hobsons Bay

The Victorian Electoral Commission describes Hobsons Bay's housing as running from historic Williamstown and Newport in the east to the newer Altona Meadows and Seabrook in the west. Newer is relative. At the 2021 Census the suburb had 18,479 residents and a median age of 41, and many of its houses are now reaching the age of a first switchboard replacement.

Hot afternoons on record at Laverton

The Bureau of Meteorology's Laverton weather station, with records going back to 1943, averages 27 days a year at or above 30 °C and 9.4 days at or above 35 °C, most of them from December to February. Those are the afternoons when an undersized or neglected system falls behind, so we size cooling for your hottest room rather than an average day.

Yes. Total Comfort is a family-run business based in Altona Meadows, and one local team handles the electrical, heating and cooling work. That helps on jobs that cross trades, such as a new reverse-cycle system that also needs switchboard work, because one team scopes the whole job and you get a fixed price for the agreed scope.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
