    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Hoppers Crossing is mostly brick veneer houses from the 1970s and 1980s, with newer estates to the north and a big retail strip. Many of the older houses have changed a lot since they were built: a renovated kitchen, a split system in the main bedroom, a replacement heater, sometimes an extension out the back. Together, those additions can leave an original switchboard, a tired evaporative cooler and a heater of unknown age all doing more than they were designed for. Total Comfort looks at the electrical, heating and cooling side together, so the next upgrade is planned around what's actually in the house.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Hoppers Crossing

    1970s and 1980s brick veneers

Plenty of these homes are still on their original switchboard, or one that has only been patched. Depending on what's been done, you might find rewireable ceramic fuses, early circuit breakers with no safety switch, or a single safety switch added later that covers the power points but not the lights. Energy Safe Victoria says the wiring should be checked in any house built more than 30 years ago, which now takes in every home from this era. A home built before 1 August 1997 may also still rely on battery-only smoke alarms.

    Renovated and extended homes

If the kitchen, heating or cooling has changed since the home was built, the board is carrying loads it was never planned for. Think of a wall oven and cooktop sharing a circuit, split systems wired in wherever there was a spare breaker, or a garage workshop and spa added years apart. Nuisance tripping, warm breakers and lights dipping when the air conditioner starts are the usual signs. A capacity and circuit-protection check before the next upgrade shows whether a new circuit will do or the board itself needs replacing.

    Newer estates to the north

Homes on the northern side are younger, and usually came with a modern board, safety switches and mains-powered smoke alarms from day one. They're a different job from the older streets: less about catching up on safety and more about adding to a sound installation. Typical requests are outdoor power and lighting for an alfresco area, sensor lights over the driveway, a dedicated circuit for a home office, or zoning so a ducted system stops heating rooms nobody is using.

Heating and cooling in Hoppers Crossing

Homes of this era often started with gas heating, either ducted or a wall heater in the living room, plus an evaporative cooler on the roof. Many have since added a split system or two for rooms the ducts never reached. That mix works, but it leaves three or four pieces of equipment of different ages, each with its own servicing needs. We look at the whole lot before recommending a repair or replacement, so money spent on the heater isn't undone by the cooler or the board next summer.

    Local notes

    On Powercor's network

Hoppers Crossing is in the City of Wyndham and on Powercor's network, one of the areas supplied from Altona Terminal Station (West). Where a house is fed by an overhead service line, Powercor says customer installation defects are the customer's responsibility to fix. Its examples include a service hook that is loose or missing where the line attaches, a defective fused mains box, and a meter box that is broken or not weatherproof. On an older house, these are worth checking whenever switchboard work is planned.

    Cold nights at Laverton

The Bureau of Meteorology's Laverton station averages a July minimum of 5.2 °C, with June and August close behind at 5.9 °C and 5.7 °C. Victorians typically use more energy for heating than for cooling, so when a system is replaced, heating efficiency deserves the first look. It applies to a like-for-like gas heater replacement just as much as to a reverse-cycle system taking over from gas.

In most cases that's the sensible fix, rather than bolting a safety switch onto an old board. When a switchboard is replaced, the Wiring Rules require RCDs on all final sub-circuits, so every circuit ends up protected. WorkSafe Victoria lists ceramic fuses and fuse blankets among its examples of asbestos-containing materials, so leave the old fuses alone and let us handle it. Main switchboard work is prescribed work, inspected by a Licensed Electrical Inspector.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
