    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Tullamarine grew quickly once the airport was built. Most of its houses went up from the late 1960s onwards, largely brick veneer and cream brick homes, and many blocks now hold units or townhouses as well. A large industrial estate runs toward the airport and the Western Ring Road. In the older houses our work usually starts at the switchboard, because a board laid out for a stove, a few lights and a gas heater is now being asked to carry air conditioning, a bigger kitchen and sometimes a car charger. We check the board and circuits first, then talk you through the options.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Tullamarine

Brick veneers from the late 1960s and 1970s

Houses from this era often still have their original switchboard, or one that has only been patched: rewireable ceramic fuses, early circuit breakers, or a single safety switch that covers the power points but not the lights. Energy Safe Victoria advises getting the wiring checked in any house over 30 years old, and every home from this period is well past that. Original boards need care before anyone works on them, because WorkSafe Victoria lists switchboards and their backing boards as a typical place for asbestos in buildings built or renovated before the late 1980s.

Units and townhouses on subdivided blocks

Where an original house has made way for two or three dwellings, the switchboards are newer, and Energy Safe Victoria says a safety switch is now compulsory on new residential installations. The limit is space. Side paths are narrow, courtyards are small and neighbours are close, so an outdoor unit needs a spot with airflow, a drain and room to service it. Whether a second split system or a car charger can go on depends on how much spare capacity the board was given.

    Industrial units and workshops

The industrial estate is a mix of warehouses, workshops and offices, many with an office or showroom at the front. The jobs here are practical: tracing a fault that keeps tripping a breaker, replacing tired batten or high-bay lighting with LED, adding a dedicated circuit for new equipment and keeping the office air conditioning working. Tell us your operating hours and who can approve a power interruption, and we'll plan the work around them.

    Heating and cooling in Tullamarine

Most of Tullamarine's older houses were built around gas heating, either a space heater in the lounge or a ducted system in the roof, and many later added an evaporative cooler or a split system for summer. Evaporative cooling works best in dry air, so it can fall short on humid days, and it does nothing in winter. Reverse-cycle is now the usual replacement, heating and cooling from one system. Victorians use more energy for heating than cooling, so we compare heating performance first.

    Local notes

    Hot northerlies, then a change

The Bureau of Meteorology says Melbourne sits between Australia's hot, dry interior and the cold Southern Ocean. In a typical weather system, warm northerly winds arrive first with higher temperatures, then a cold front can change conditions within minutes. On flat, exposed ground like Tullamarine's, a system that has to swing from cooling to heating within hours needs to be sized and placed for both.

    Buying an older house

Energy Safe Victoria says that when buying a home built before the 1980s, it is imperative to have the wiring checked by a licensed electrical inspector or registered electrical contractor before moving in. Many of Tullamarine's original houses fall into that group. An electrical safety inspection before settlement shows what the switchboard, safety switches and visible cabling need, so the work can go into your budget early.

    Battery or mains smoke alarms

The Building and Plumbing Commission says homes built after 1 August 1997 must have smoke alarms connected to 240V mains power with a backup battery, while older homes may have battery-powered alarms. Most of Tullamarine's original houses were built well before that date, so battery alarms are common. If you're moving to hard-wired alarms, Consumer Affairs Victoria says they must be installed by a qualified electrician.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

Not always straight away, but it should be checked. Rewireable fuses protect the cable, not the people using it, and older boards often have no safety switch, or one that covers only the power points. If the board is replaced, Energy Safe Victoria's guidance is that the Wiring Rules require safety switches on all final sub-circuits, and because main switchboard work is prescribed, a licensed electrical inspector has to inspect it before the power goes back on. We look at the board and the circuits behind it, then explain what's needed now and what can wait.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
