    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Albion is an established neighbourhood around its railway station, where original houses share the streets with units and newer infill townhouses. Much of the work here starts with an extension. A bedroom goes on the back or the living area is opened up, and the old circuits are asked to run extra lights, a heater and an air conditioner. We check what's there before adding to it, because the age of a house says little about the state of its wiring. Total Comfort is family-run and based in Altona Meadows. Albion sits beyond our core area, so include the full address and we'll confirm whether we can help.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Albion

    Original houses and their extensions

When an older house is extended, the new rooms are wired to current rules, but they still hang off the old switchboard. Energy Safe Victoria notes that the Wiring Rules require additional safety-switch protection in existing installations when alterations are made or a switchboard is replaced. On a board with rewireable fuses, or one safety switch looking after the power points only, that can mean a new board becomes part of the extension. Sorting that out at the design stage tells you, before the builder starts, whether the electrical side is an addition or an upgrade.

    Units in small blocks

Older units usually have a meter panel shared with the rest of the block and a small switchboard of their own, sometimes inside the unit and sometimes out at the meters. There is rarely spare room on those boards, and a gas wall heater in the lounge may be the only heating. Adding a split system means finding a circuit, a pipe route and a place for the outdoor unit that doesn't sit on someone else's patch. Where a wall or yard is common property, check with the owners corporation before anything is fixed to it.

    Infill townhouses

Newer townhouses come with modern switchboards, and a safety switch is compulsory on new residential installations. What they often lack is capacity for the way people actually live: a handful of power points per room, no outdoor power and a single split in the living area. Adding circuits to a modern board is usually straightforward if there's space on it. The harder part is the outdoor unit, which has to share a small courtyard or side path with the bins, the clothesline and a fence line shared with next door.

    Heating and cooling in Albion

Heating in Albion often comes down to one gas heater, a wall furnace in a unit or a space heater in an older house, with a split added for summer. If you're extending or sealing up draughts, have a licensed gasfitter check that heater: Energy Safe Victoria warns that doing either around an open-flued heater can alter the ventilation the home needs to clear its carbon monoxide. Reverse-cycle heating is the usual alternative, and it can move three to five units of heat for every unit of electricity.

    Local notes

Between older Sunshine and newer Cairnlea

Albion is one of the suburbs in Brimbank's community profile, and it sits between two quite different neighbours. A Victorian Electoral Commission profile of the municipality says pre- and post-war homes characterise established suburbs such as Sunshine, while recently developed suburbs such as Cairnlea feature more contemporary housing. Albion has houses, units and infill, so one street can hold a fuse board from decades ago and a brand-new townhouse board a few doors apart.

    Winter nights set the size

Bureau of Meteorology records from Laverton, south-west of Albion, show July as the coldest month, with a mean minimum of 5.2 °C. June averages 5.9 °C and August 5.7 °C. A unit with one wall heater in the lounge leaves the bedrooms cold on those nights. When we size a reverse-cycle system for a bedroom or an extension, we read its heating capacity first, because Victorians usually use more energy for heating than for cooling.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

The existing circuits and the switchboard, before any new lights or heating are added. We test the insulation on the old cable, work out how the circuits are laid out and check whether the board has room and safety-switch protection for the new work. Fire Rescue Victoria's summary also says homes largely renovated or extended after 1 May 2014 need interconnected, hard-wired smoke alarms on 240-volt mains with a backup battery, so allow for that in the plans.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
