    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Maribyrnong follows the river, with houses on the established streets and townhouse and apartment precincts along the water and around Highpoint. Very different jobs sit side by side here. An apartment air conditioner depends on where the building allows the outdoor unit to go and how equipment gets in. A townhouse spread over several levels needs heating and cooling that stops the top floor overheating while the ground floor stays cool. A house may be ready for an EV charger or a bigger system. Total Comfort handles the electrical and the heating and cooling together, with honest advice on what suits the property.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Maribyrnong

Apartments by the river and Highpoint

In an apartment, most decisions start with the building. The owners corporation usually decides where outdoor units may sit, whether that's a balcony, a roof plant area or a basement, and cabling through common property may need its approval. Each apartment normally has its own small switchboard, fed from meters in a common room or cupboard. Since 1 January 2024, new homes that need a planning permit have had to be all-electric, so in the newest buildings cooking, hot water and heating may all run from that one board.

    Townhouses over several levels

Multi-level townhouses usually put the living areas on one floor and bedrooms above, often with a lot of glass. Heat rises through the stairwell, so a single unit downstairs rarely keeps the top floor comfortable. The usual answers are a split system on each level or a ducted system with a zone for each floor. Where there's a garage, an EV charger is usually simple to plan, provided the switchboard and supply have room for it.

Established houses on the older streets

Detached houses on the older streets often still run gas ducted heating, with split systems added later for summer. When the heater or an old air conditioner reaches the end of its life, reverse-cycle ducted or a set of split systems can take over both jobs. The Victorian Government says a reverse-cycle system more than 15 years old will typically use more than three times the energy of a modern one. A new system also adds load, so we check the board first.

    Heating and cooling in Maribyrnong

Glass is the big variable in Maribyrnong homes. Apartments and townhouses with wide windows facing the river or the western sun can heat up quickly on a summer afternoon, then lose warmth through the same glazing on a winter night. That's why room size and glazing belong in your enquiry. Melbourne sits in the Cold zone on the Zoned Energy Rating Label for air conditioners, so read the Cold-zone figures, including the red heating number, when comparing units.

    Local notes

On the river, in the City of Maribyrnong

The City of Maribyrnong sits on the Maribyrnong River, 4 km west of central Melbourne, and the suburb of Maribyrnong is one of its nine suburbs, alongside Braybrook, Footscray, Kingsville, Maidstone, Seddon, West Footscray, Tottenham and Yarraville. Where a home faces the river, outdoor equipment may end up on a balcony or an exposed wall, so we choose brackets and fixings to suit and make sure it can be reached again for servicing.

    Heat health warnings

For heat health warnings, Victoria's Department of Health places Maribyrnong City in the Central forecast district, and it issues a warning in response to a new Bureau of Meteorology severe or extreme heatwave warning. Its advice ahead of extreme heat is to check that your fan and air conditioner work well, have the air conditioner serviced if needed, and keep filters and vents clean. Run the system on a mild spring day so any fault shows up before the first hot spell rather than during it.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

Get the owners corporation's position on where the outdoor unit may go, and whether pipes or cables can pass through common property. Then check access: lift bookings, a loading bay or parking for the van, and any hours when work isn't allowed. Once we know the permitted spot, we choose a model that fits its clearances and drainage. Split systems carry separate inside and outside noise ratings on their energy label, which helps when the outdoor unit sits near a neighbour's bedroom.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

He's a true gentleman and absolutely fantastic with kids. My daughter was so impressed she now wants to be an electrician! 😂 Highly recommend Aaron and the team!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
