    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Brooklyn's houses sit in residential pockets alongside industrial and freight precincts, with the western arterial roads carrying trucks between them. That mix shapes the work. At home it is often an older switchboard being asked to run air conditioning it was never set up for, or a split system whose filters and outdoor coil load up with grit faster than they would further from the yards. At work it is high-bay lighting, circuits feeding machinery, and site offices that need their own heating and cooling. Total Comfort is family-run and based in Altona Meadows, with one local team for electrical, heating and cooling.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Brooklyn

Older houses in the residential streets

Most of Brooklyn's homes are established weatherboard and brick houses, and many have gained a new kitchen, a bathroom or a couple of split systems over the years without the switchboard keeping pace. We start with the warning signs Energy Safe Victoria lists for faulty wiring: an old board, particularly one without a safety switch, worn or broken switches and power points, and flickering lights. Older boards need care for another reason. WorkSafe Victoria lists switchboards and their backing boards among the typical uses of asbestos, particularly in buildings built or renovated before the late 1980s, so nothing gets drilled or cut until we know what it is made of.

Homes close to freight routes and industrial land

Living a street or two from trucks and yards changes how a house gets heated and cooled. If you keep the windows shut against dust and noise, the air conditioning carries more of the load, and fine grit settles on the filters, the indoor coil and the fins of the outdoor unit. A clogged unit moves less air and works harder for the same result. When we install, we place the outdoor unit away from passing traffic and yard dust where the block allows, and away from bedroom windows so its own hum doesn't add to the noise.

    Warehouses, workshops and yards

Commercial work here runs at a different scale. Warehouse lighting hangs from high ceilings and stays on for long shifts, workshops run compressors, welders and other machinery on dedicated circuits, and one fault can stop a loading dock. For a business enquiry, include your operating hours, the equipment affected and whether a shutdown needs to be arranged, because a suburb name alone does not tell us which premises we need to access. Heating or cooling a whole warehouse is rarely practical, so the site office and lunch room usually get their own split systems.

    Heating and cooling in Brooklyn

In older houses the lounge is often still heated by a gas space heater or an ageing ducted unit, with a wall split added later for summer. Victorians typically use more energy for heating than cooling, so when either system is due for replacement we weigh heating efficiency first, and a reverse-cycle system that does both jobs usually comes out ahead. If you keep the gas heater, Energy Safe Victoria recommends having it serviced at least every two years by a qualified gasfitter.

    Local notes

Two councils, one heat warning district

Brooklyn is split between two councils, with part of the suburb in Hobsons Bay City and part in the City of Brimbank. For heat health warnings the boundary makes no difference. The Victorian Department of Health places both council areas in the Central forecast district, and it issues a heat health warning when the Bureau of Meteorology puts out a new severe or extreme heatwave warning. A warning for the Central district covers both sides of the suburb, so it is worth having the air conditioning checked well before one arrives.

Jemena's network, and where your side begins

Jemena describes its electricity supply area as running from Hillside, Sydenham and Brooklyn in the west, so Brooklyn sits at the western edge of that network. Energy Safe Victoria says fallen or unsafe powerlines, and rotting, damaged or leaning poles, go to your local electricity distribution company. From the point of supply, the installation is the property owner's responsibility, including any private electric lines on the property. That is where our work starts: the mains to your switchboard, the board itself and every circuit beyond it.

Both ends of the Laverton record

The Bureau of Meteorology's Laverton station, with records back to 1943, averages 9.4 days a year at or above 35 °C, mostly between December and February. July is its coldest month, with a mean minimum of 5.2 °C. A metal-roofed workshop feels the first figure and an older weatherboard house feels the second, which is why we plan heating and cooling together rather than one season at a time.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

No. The certificate and inspection rules we work to apply across Victoria. Whenever a licensed electrician completes electrical installation work, they must provide a Certificate of Electrical Safety. Work on the main switchboard, consumer mains or meter box is prescribed and needs inspection by a Licensed Electrical Inspector. Lights, power points and air conditioning are non-prescribed, and for that work you must receive your copy of the certificate within 30 days.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
