A Tesla charging in a garage
    The short answer
A Tesla Wall Connector is a fixed home charger that runs on its own circuit from the switchboard. During setup, its maximum current is set to match that circuit, so it never draws more than the wiring was built for. We check the board, supply and cable route first, mount it where the lead reaches the charge port, and test it with your car.

A Tesla Wall Connector charges far faster than a power point, but only as fast as your circuit and supply allow. We check the board and supply first, run a dedicated circuit, mount the unit where the lead reaches the charge port and set its current to suit. Then we test it with your car.

    When to get it checked

    • A Tesla on the way

The car is booked and you want home charging sorted before it arrives, not a lead through the laundry window.

    • The portable charger can't keep up

Charging from a normal power point barely puts back a long day's driving overnight, especially with two drivers or a long commute.

    • A warm plug or power point

The plug or outlet gets hot or discoloured during long charging sessions. That connection is struggling and needs checking before you charge again.

    • Trips in the evening

A breaker or safety switch drops partway through a charge, often when cooking and heating are running as well.

    • A Wall Connector still in its box

You bought one with the car or online, and it's waiting for an electrician to install it properly.

    Why it happens

    4 common causes
    • Power points aren't made for all-night loads

A standard outlet handles a kettle for minutes, not a car for hours. Worn contacts and loose terminals heat up under that steady load.

    • Supplies set up before EVs

Older homes may have a modest connection, and a charger joins the oven, heating and hot water on it in the evening. That's where load management or a supply upgrade comes in.

    • The car sets the top speed

A Wall Connector can deliver more than some cars can accept, particularly on three-phase. The car's onboard charger caps AC charging, whatever the wall unit can do.

    • Mounted on the wrong side

Most Teslas charge from the rear left corner. A Wall Connector on the wrong wall means the lead is stretched around the car every night.

    Your options, explained

Portable charger on a dedicated outlet

    Low disruption
    Best for
Lighter daily driving, or as a stopgap
    How it works
If you have Tesla's portable charger, it plugs into a heavy-duty outlet on its own circuit, so charging doesn't share with the garage fridge or tools.
    Worth knowing
Slower than a Wall Connector, but far better than an old power point on a shared circuit.

    Wall Connector on single-phase

    Medium disruption
    Best for
Most homes and regular daily driving
    How it works
The Wall Connector runs on a dedicated single-phase circuit, with its current set to suit the circuit and the supply.
    Worth knowing
With a sensible charge rate or load management, it shares a typical supply with the rest of the house.

    Wall Connector on three-phase

    Medium disruption
    Best for
Homes with three-phase power, or upgrading for other big loads too
    How it works
The Wall Connector is wired to all three phases, so it can deliver more than on single-phase, up to what the car accepts.
    Worth knowing
Check your car's AC charging limit first. It makes most sense alongside other large loads such as ducted air conditioning or a workshop.

    Two cars sharing power

    Medium disruption
    Best for
    Households with two EVs
    How it works
Two Wall Connectors can be set up to share the available power, so both cars charge without overloading the supply.
    Worth knowing
Best planned together. We check what your models and supply support before quoting.

    Check the car's limit
The car's onboard charger caps how fast it charges at home.
    Think about parking
Most Teslas charge from the rear left, so tell us how you park.
    Bigger loads planned?
Solar, a battery or ducted air con share the same supply. Mention them early.

    What affects the price?

The right scope depends on your installation. These are the details we check so your quote is useful, with any additional work explained before it proceeds.

    • Distance from the board

A Wall Connector on the garage wall behind the switchboard is a short run. A carport across the yard or a double-storey home means more cable and time.

    • Switchboard space and condition

A spare position and modern protection make it straightforward. A full board, old fuses or no room for the right safety switch add work.

    • Your supply

If the supply is tight, a lower charge rate or load management may solve it. Some homes need a mains or supply upgrade, priced as its own line.

    • Trenching and surfaces

Underground runs to a carport or detached garage go in conduit. Concrete, pavers and garden beds take planning, and who reinstates them is agreed at quote time.

    • Wi-Fi, mounting and extras

A garage beyond Wi-Fi range, a pedestal instead of a wall, or a second Wall Connector each change the scope.

    How it runs

    1. 1

      Send details

Car model, parking spot and a photo of the switchboard.

    2. 2

      Check and quote

Board, supply and route checked, with the price before we start.

    3. 3

      Install and commission

Circuit run, Wall Connector mounted and its current set.

    4. 4

      Test and certify

Test charge with your car, and a certificate issued.

Step by step, in more detail

    5 steps
    1. Tell us about the car and the house

Send the model, where it parks, a photo of the switchboard and whether you already have the Wall Connector. Mention solar, a battery or other big electric loads.

    2. Check the board, supply and route

We check board space, the main switch, the incoming supply and the cable path to the parking spot, then work out a charge rate the house can carry.

    3. Price before we start

You get the price for the agreed scope, with the circuit, cable route, protection, mounting and any load management or switchboard work set out.

    4. Install and commission

A dedicated circuit goes in with its own protection, the Wall Connector is mounted and wired, and its maximum current is set during commissioning to match the circuit.

    5. Test with your car

We connect it to your Wi-Fi for updates where it's in range, run a charge with your car and show you how to schedule charging. You get a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

What is safe to do, and what to leave to us

    Safe for you to do

    • Plug a portable charger straight into a wall outlet in good condition, not a power board.
    • If the plug or outlet smells hot or looks scorched, stop the charge from the car or app and leave it unplugged until it's checked.
    • Reset a tripped safety switch once. If it won't reset or trips again, leave it off and call a licensed electrician.

    Leave these to us

    • Charging through an extension lead or double adaptor.
    • Running the lead under a door or through a window where it gets pinched or wet.
    • Using a charging lead with a cut cable, cracked plug or burnt pins.
    • Installing or rewiring a Wall Connector yourself. Energy Safe Victoria says unlicensed electrical work is illegal and potentially fatal.

    When to get us in

    • Before the car arrives, or before you buy a Wall Connector
    • The outlet you charge from is warm, marked or loose
    • A breaker or safety switch trips while the car charges
    • You're adding solar, a battery or a second EV
    • You're building or renovating and want the garage ready
Ask us to take a look

    More detail

Why the Wall Connector needs its own circuit

A Wall Connector draws a steady, heavy current for hours, which is exactly what a shared power circuit isn't designed for. On its own circuit, with its own protection, it can charge at the rate you've chosen without competing with the fridge or the garage tools.

Energy Safe Victoria guidance says the Wiring Rules require safety switch protection on every final sub-circuit in a home, and Type AC safety switches can't be installed any more, even like for like. We match the protection to the Wall Connector's installation manual.

    Setting the charge rate

During commissioning, the Wall Connector is told the size of the circuit it's on, and it won't draw more than that. We set it to what the circuit, the switchboard and your supply can comfortably carry alongside the rest of the house.

If the supply is tight, there are options short of an upgrade: a lower setting, charging scheduled for overnight, or load management where your setup supports it. We'll tell you plainly if the supply itself needs work.

    Single-phase or three-phase

Most homes run on single-phase power, and a single-phase Wall Connector suits most daily driving. Three-phase lets it deliver more, up to what your car's onboard charger accepts, and it makes the most sense when the house has other big loads too, such as ducted air conditioning, a workshop or a second EV.

If you're weighing it up, our single phase to three phase upgrade page explains when the upgrade is worth doing.

Where it goes and how you park

Most Teslas charge from the rear left corner, so whether you reverse in or drive in decides which wall suits. We mount the Wall Connector where the lead reaches the port comfortably without crossing a walkway, and leave room for the cable to be wrapped back on the unit, clear of the wheels.

Its Type 2 plug is the standard connector on most EVs sold in Australia, so a second car of another make can often use it too. Check that car's manual first.

    Local rules and conditions

Victorian requirements and local conditions that shape this job, with the sources listed at the foot of the page.

Your network and a supply upgrade

Laverton, Altona Meadows, Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee and Wyndham Vale are supplied by Powercor through Altona Terminal Station (West). Jemena's area reaches Williamstown and Footscray, and parts of Port Melbourne are on CitiPower. If a charger means a bigger supply, the upgrade is arranged with the distributor for your street. From the point of supply onward, the wiring is the owner's to maintain.

    Hot afternoons and outside walls

The Laverton weather station averages 27.0 days a year at or above 30 °C, mostly from December to February. Chargers can slow down when they run hot, so where the lead allows, we mount the Wall Connector out of the harsh afternoon sun.

    Common questions

Yes, with a portable charger, but it's slow and the outlet runs at a heavy load for hours. If you'll charge that way regularly, have the outlet and circuit checked first.
