    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Point Cook was built estate by estate, mostly from the late 1990s on, so its homes are younger than those in the older parts of the west. Younger isn't the same as trouble-free. Big double storey homes ask one ducted system to heat and cool two very different levels, the first estates have smoke alarms and heating reaching the end of their original life, and the newer townhouses near the town centre fit a lot onto small blocks. Total Comfort covers Point Cook from Altona Meadows with one local team for electrical, heating and cooling, which helps when a new air conditioner also raises a switchboard question.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Point Cook

    The first estates

The earliest streets were built from the late 1990s through the 2000s. A home built after 1 August 1997 had to have smoke alarms connected to 240V mains power with a backup battery. Boards from this era normally have circuit breakers and some safety switch protection, but they were sized for the house as built, not for ducted cooling, an induction cooktop and a car charger. Gas ducted heating was the usual original fit, often with cooling added later, and plenty of those first heaters and outdoor units are now well into their working life.

    Double storey family homes

Open-plan living downstairs, bedrooms upstairs, and often one ducted system with a single thermostat in the hallway trying to please both floors. It rarely can. These homes also pile on electrical load over the years: ducted cooling, a pool or spa pump, a second fridge in the garage, a home office running all day. Before the next big appliance goes in, it's worth knowing what the switchboard and the supply can carry, rather than finding out when the main switch trips on a hot evening.

    Townhouses near the town centre

Newer, tighter and often sharing a wall, so space is the constraint: for outdoor units, for the switchboard and for cable routes between floors. Homes built, largely renovated or extended after 1 May 2014 need interconnected, hard-wired smoke alarms, so one alarm sets off the rest. New homes that needed a planning permit have had to be all-electric since 1 January 2024, which means some of the newest townhouses have no gas at all, and heating, hot water and cooking all draw from the one board.

Heating and cooling in Point Cook

Many Point Cook homes started with gas ducted heating, and plenty have since added refrigerated ducted cooling or split systems. In a two-storey house the complaint is usually balance, not capacity. Heat rises, so a warm northerly afternoon cooks the upstairs bedrooms while the living area stays comfortable, then the cool change arrives and the ground floor feels it first. Zoning, a second thermostat, better return-air paths or a small separate system upstairs often solve it without replacing the main unit.

    Local notes

A young suburb, by the Census

The 2021 Census counted 66,781 people in Point Cook, with a median age of 33. In a suburb that big, built over a fairly short stretch of years, a lot of homes reach the same milestones together: smoke alarms due for replacement, heating and cooling equipment into its second decade, and boards filling up as households add appliances. If your neighbours are replacing something, yours may be worth a look as well.

    Hot afternoons at nearby Laverton

The Bureau of Meteorology's weather station at nearby Laverton averages 27 days a year at or above 30 °C and 9.4 days at or above 35 °C, most of them from December to February. In a double-storey home, those are the afternoons when upstairs rooms and west-facing glass work hardest, so that is where we start when sizing cooling.

    Powercor network, Wyndham council

Point Cook is in the City of Wyndham and on Powercor's network, within the area supplied from Altona Terminal Station (West). Powercor describes that area as part of Melbourne's western growth corridor. Knowing your distributor matters when the problem is on the street side: fallen or unsafe powerlines and damaged or leaning poles are reported to the electricity distribution company, not to an electrician.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

Usually not as a first step. We check how the system is zoned, whether the dampers work, where the return air is drawn from, and how the upstairs ducts are run and insulated. The Victorian Government recommends zones for ducted systems so areas such as living rooms and bedrooms can be heated or cooled on their own. Sometimes a separate small system for the upstairs bedrooms is the better fix.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

He's a true gentleman and absolutely fantastic with kids. My daughter was so impressed she now wants to be an electrician! 😂 Highly recommend Aaron and the team!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
