    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Around Laverton station, post-war weatherboard and brick houses still set the tone, and many of their blocks now carry a newer unit or townhouse at the back. The suburb is also split between two councils, Hobsons Bay and Wyndham. For an electrician, that means a ceramic fuse board and a brand new switchboard can be a driveway apart, and the heating can be a gas heater in the lounge in one home and a set of wall splits in the next. Total Comfort is based next door in Altona Meadows, and one local team covers the electrical, heating and cooling work in both.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Laverton

    Post-war weatherboards around the station

The Hobsons Bay Planning Scheme names post-war industrial and residential expansion as the change that transformed Laverton, and weatherboards from that time still line many of the streets near the station. They were wired for far less than a household runs today, and the original board often held ceramic fuses for a handful of circuits. Since then, many have had power run out to a garage or bungalow, a hot water service changed and a heater added, often by extending whichever circuit was nearest. Energy Safe Victoria says the wiring in any house built more than 30 years ago should be checked, and in these homes that check usually starts in the roof space.

Brick houses with a family room on the back

Many brick houses from the same era have gained a family room, a bigger kitchen or a converted sleep-out. Each addition tended to bring a small sub-board or a circuit tapped off the nearest one, which is how new rooms end up on overloaded runs with no safety switch. Energy Safe Victoria's guidance is that when a switchboard is replaced, AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) requires safety switches on all final sub-circuits, so the original rooms get the same protection as the new ones. If a split system went in along the way, we check its circuit too, because Energy Safe Victoria says a manufacturer's requirement for a dedicated circuit or safety switch must be followed.

The front house and the unit behind

Plenty of blocks now hold the original house at the front and a newer single-storey unit or double-storey townhouse behind it. Energy Safe Victoria says a safety switch is now compulsory on new residential installations, so in the newer dwelling the questions are about capacity and position rather than protection. Adding a second split system or a car charger depends on how much spare room the board was given, and the outdoor unit has to fit a narrow courtyard without sitting under a neighbour's window. Where the front house still has its original board, two homes on the one driveway can need very different work.

    Heating and cooling in Laverton

The Bureau of Meteorology's Laverton station averages about 27 days a year at or above 30 °C, yet July's average minimum there is 5.2 °C, so homes here need real heating and real cooling. In the original weatherboards, the gas heater in the lounge rarely reaches the far bedrooms, and a reverse-cycle split in the family room or main bedroom often helps more than a bigger heater. In double-storey units, heat gathers upstairs in summer, and one downstairs unit rarely keeps the bedrooms comfortable.

    Local notes

Split between Hobsons Bay and Wyndham

Both councils' community profiles list Laverton as a part suburb, so depending on your street you are in Hobsons Bay City or the City of Wyndham. Planning and building questions go to the council for your address. For heat, the line makes no difference: the Department of Health places both councils in the Central district for heat health warnings, so a Central district warning covers the whole suburb.

Powercor's network, and the meter box on your wall

Powercor's planning report lists Laverton among the areas supplied from the Altona Terminal Station (West). Where that supply reaches an older house, the fittings matter. Powercor says an insecure or missing service hook, a defective fused mains box, or a meter box with a missing door, broken hinges or no weatherproofing are customer installation defects, and fixing them falls to the customer. On post-war weatherboards those fittings can be as old as the house, so we look at them whenever we work on the board.

It starts with a look at the board and what it is mounted on. WorkSafe Victoria lists switchboards and their backing boards among the typical places asbestos is found in buildings built or renovated before the late 1980s; if an asbestos mounting panel has to come out, it must be replaced with non-asbestos material, and a licensed asbestos removalist may be needed where the board has deteriorated. The new board is fitted with circuit breakers and safety switches, and each circuit is tested. Because it is a main switchboard, the power cannot go back on until a licensed electrical inspector has inspected the work.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
