    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Most Yarraville streets are lined with Victorian and Edwardian weatherboards and interwar bungalows, and plenty of them have been opened up at the back with a new kitchen and living room. That makes a house of two halves. The front rooms often run on older circuits and a heater that has been there for decades, while the extension has downlights, an induction cooktop and a large split system, all drawing on the same switchboard. Total Comfort is one local team for electrical, heating and cooling, based in Altona Meadows. We look at both halves of the house before we suggest anything.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Yarraville

    Victorian and Edwardian weatherboards

The original cottages are compact, with high ceilings, a hallway down one side and a switchboard often mounted on the front verandah or just inside the door. Over a century the wiring tends to be replaced in patches, so one house can have old rubber or fabric-insulated cable in a front bedroom and modern cable in the kitchen. Ceiling spaces under corrugated iron are low and hot, which limits where new cable and ductwork can run. Energy Safe Victoria says the wiring should be checked in any house built more than 30 years ago, and these houses are well past that.

    Interwar bungalows

Bungalows from between the wars often have a little more width, brick or weatherboard walls and a deeper roof with more room to work above the ceiling. That space can make ducted heating and cooling, a bulkhead unit or new lighting circuits easier to run than in a Victorian cottage. The catch is usually the board. Many still carry a mix of rewireable fuses and later additions, and WorkSafe Victoria lists switchboards and their backing boards among the typical places to find asbestos-containing material in buildings built or renovated before the late 1980s. We check what the board is mounted on before anyone drills or cuts.

Period homes with a rear extension

An extension brings new circuits for the kitchen, a dishwasher, an oven or induction cooktop, downlights, outdoor lights and air conditioning, and every one of them comes back to a board set up for a much smaller house. Sometimes the old board has room. Often it has neither the space nor the safety switches for the new work. The build is usually the easiest time to sort it out, while walls are open and the ceiling can be reached. A floor plan showing the old and new rooms lets us plan lighting, power, heating and cooling together rather than one trade at a time.

    Heating and cooling in Yarraville

The two halves of an extended Yarraville house rarely heat and cool the same way. Front rooms with high ceilings and little insulation lose warmth on still winter nights, and many still rely on an old gas space heater or one split in the lounge. The glazed living area at the back gains heat fast on a hot afternoon. One oversized unit seldom suits both ends. Depending on the roof space and where an outdoor unit can sit, we compare a multi-head system, separate splits and zoned ducted.

    Local notes

    Small cottages on narrow frontages

The heritage description of the Yarraville Residential Precinct sums up the streets well: small single-storey Victorian and Edwardian detached houses, mainly weatherboard with some brick, corrugated iron roofs, front verandahs and narrow block frontages. Narrow frontages mean tight side paths. We plan where an outdoor unit, meter box work or a new cable run will go before we quote, and we try to keep equipment off the street-facing verandah.

    Hot northerlies, then a change

The Bureau of Meteorology explains that warm northerly winds often reach Melbourne first with higher temperatures, and a cold front can then change conditions within minutes. Records at its Laverton station, kept since 1943, average 27.0 days a year at or above 30 °C and 9.4 days at or above 35 °C, most of them between December and February. A glazed rear extension feels those afternoons first, so we size cooling for the room you actually live in during summer.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

Not automatically. Energy Safe Victoria notes that the Wiring Rules require additional RCD protection in an existing installation when alterations are made, which often means a new board, but that is not the same as rewiring every room. We test the front circuits before anything new is connected to them. If we find old rubber or fabric-insulated cable, it usually makes sense to replace it while the walls and ceilings are open for the extension. You get the options, and a fixed price for the agreed scope, before we start.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
