    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Sunshine is an established centre in Brimbank, with older residential streets, a busy town centre and newer apartment buildings. Most electrical questions here start with the age of the house. Many homes were wired long before split systems, dishwashers and a charger in every room, and the switchboard often shows every change made since. Apartments and shops raise different questions: where the board is, who owns it and who has to approve the work. Sunshine is one of the neighbouring suburbs we take enquiries from, so send the address and the job and we'll confirm whether we can help.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Sunshine

    Pre-war and post-war houses

Houses of this age commonly have a board that's been added to piece by piece: ceramic fuses beside a few newer breakers, one safety switch or none, and cable from more than one era behind the walls. Energy Safe Victoria says wiring should be checked in any house built more than 30 years ago, and lists old switchboards, especially those without a safety switch, among the signs of faulty wiring. WorkSafe Victoria names switchboards and their backing boards as a typical place for asbestos in buildings built or renovated before the late 1980s, so we treat an old board with that in mind.

    Apartments near the town centre

Apartment work starts with approvals and access, not tools. Your own board may be just inside the front door while the main switch and meters sit in a locked meter room, and the owners corporation usually decides whether an outdoor air-conditioning unit can go on a balcony or wall at all. Get the owner's approval and find out who holds the meter room key before the site visit, so the job isn't held up at the door.

    Shops and mixed buildings

A shop can have lighting and power changed by a string of past tenants, circuits nobody labelled, and sometimes a flat upstairs supplied through the same building. For retail premises, confirm the owner's approval, who can open the board and your trading hours, so any shutdown is planned around customers rather than during them.

    Heating and cooling in Sunshine

Many older Sunshine houses were built around one heater in the lounge and still rely on a gas space heater, with a split or two added for summer. Timber floors and older windows let warmth escape on cold, still nights, so a system sized off a brochure can fall short. If you're adding reverse-cycle, we check whether the switchboard needs an upgrade first. If a gas heater is staying, Energy Safe Victoria recommends a service at least every two years.

    Local notes

    An established Brimbank centre

Sunshine is in the City of Brimbank, and a Victorian Electoral Commission fact sheet on the municipality says pre- and post-war homes characterise its established suburbs, naming Sunshine with St Albans and Deer Park. Homes from those years were wired for far less than a modern household runs, which is why a new circuit in Sunshine starts with a look at the board rather than a guess from a description.

    Which network supplies your street

Jemena's 2025 planning report describes its electricity supply area as reaching Williamstown and Footscray in the south and Hillside, Sydenham and Brooklyn in the west. That's an outline of the network's edges, not a street list, so use the distributor named on your bill for outages and fallen lines. From the point of supply, where the network meets your property, the owner is responsible for maintaining and repairing the installation, and that's the side a licensed electrician works on.

    Cold, still winter nights

At the Bureau of Meteorology's weather station at Laverton, south-west of Sunshine, July is the coldest month with a mean minimum of 5.2 °C, and June and August sit at 5.9 °C and 5.7 °C. The Victorian Government notes that Victorians typically use more energy for heating than cooling, and suggests choosing a unit with higher heating efficiency. In an older, draughty house, we size for those winter nights first.

Usually, but the board comes first. A new air conditioner generally needs its own circuit, and an old fuse board may have no spare room and no safety switch. If the board is replaced, Energy Safe Victoria's guidance is that the Wiring Rules then require safety switches on all final sub-circuits, so the whole house comes up to that standard at once. A photo of the board as you normally see it, without removing any covers, helps us scope it.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
