    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Kingsville is a small, mostly residential suburb of interwar and post-war weatherboard and brick houses, with some newer townhouses where older blocks have been redeveloped. The questions here are usually about what an established house can take. Will the board run an induction cooktop? Will the supply cope if the gas heater goes and reverse-cycle comes in? Which meter is ours in a row of townhouses? Total Comfort is a family-run electrical, heating and cooling business based in Altona Meadows. We check the board, the circuits and the access first, so the answer rests on your house rather than a guess.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Kingsville

    Interwar weatherboards

The older houses were built when a home had a few lights, a handful of power points and not much else. Most have been rewired or partly rewired since, but it is common to find the kitchen and laundry sharing a circuit, a single safety switch added to an old board, and extra circuits tacked on for a split system over the years. Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards, particularly those without a safety switch, and old or broken switches and power points among the tell-tale signs of faulty wiring. We map what's there before adding to it.

    Post-war brick and weatherboard houses

Houses from the 1950s and 1960s were often built around gas: a gas stove, gas hot water and a space heater in the lounge, later joined by a split system or ducted heating. Their roof spaces are generally easier to work in than a Victorian cottage's, which helps with new circuits, ducts and downlights. The limit is more often the supply itself. Older homes can have a modest single-phase supply, and going all-electric may mean upgrading the cable between the pole and the switchboard first.

    Townhouses on redeveloped blocks

Newer townhouses usually have their own switchboard inside, but the meters are often grouped in one enclosure at the front or along the driveway, and walls, fences and the driveway itself may be shared. Before a visit it helps to know which meter and main switch belong to your dwelling, whether the driveway is common property, and where a ladder can safely go up. If the townhouse was built after 1 August 1997, it should have smoke alarms connected to 240V mains power with a backup battery.

    Heating and cooling in Kingsville

Most Kingsville houses started with a gas space heater or gas ducted heating, and many have since added a split system in the living room for summer. Victorians typically use more energy for heating than cooling, so when an ageing heater gives way to reverse-cycle, the heating efficiency matters more than the cooling figure. In an established house the switchboard often sets the order of work, so we check whether the board needs an upgrade before a new reverse-cycle system goes in.

    Local notes

Kingsville and South Kingsville sit in different councils

Kingsville is one of the suburbs of the City of Maribyrnong, the council area on the Maribyrnong River about 4 km west of central Melbourne. South Kingsville, despite the name, is part of Hobsons Bay City. The two get mixed up in bookings, and anything that goes to council goes to a different office, so give us the full street address and the suburb on your rates notice when you enquire.

    Cold July nights

Bureau of Meteorology records from its Laverton station give July a mean minimum of 5.2 °C, with June at 5.9 °C and August at 5.7 °C. That is the stretch when an old gas heater or a single split in the lounge gets tested, and when the bedrooms at the far end of the house go cold. When we size reverse-cycle heating for a Kingsville home, we size it for those nights, not for a mild autumn afternoon.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

Often, yes, but check before you buy the cooktop. An induction cooktop needs its own circuit from the switchboard, sized for the appliance, and the board needs room and safety-switch protection for it. Then there is the supply. Where more capacity is needed, a larger single-phase supply is often enough, and a three-phase upgrade makes sense when several big loads run at once. Send us the cooktop's model number and a photo of the board with its cover closed.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
