    The local picture

    Work that fits your property

Seddon packs a lot into a compact area: streets of small Victorian and Edwardian houses, some of them attached, a village shopping precinct, and townhouses built where an older house once stood. Homes of that age were wired and heated for a very different way of living, and they don't leave much room for additions. Ceiling spaces are tight, boundaries are shared and there's often no easy side access. Total Comfort plans cable routes and equipment positions around those limits before quoting, so you know the scope and the price before any work starts.

Every installation is different. We start with the symptoms, existing equipment and access, then explain the work needed and the options available.

    Homes in Seddon

    Small Victorian and Edwardian cottages

In a house of this age, the original wiring has usually been replaced at least once, and what replaced it may itself be decades old. Brittle rubber-insulated cable, circuits extended from room to room and a fuse board by the front door are all typical of older work. Tight ceiling spaces mean rewiring often happens from under the floor as well as above the ceiling, where there's subfloor access. We look at the cable types and how the circuits are split before recommending a partial or full rewire.

    Attached houses on shared walls

Some of Seddon's period houses are attached, sharing a wall with next door. That usually means no side access at all, so an outdoor air-conditioning unit has to go in the back yard, on a rear wall or sometimes on the roof, and pipework has to travel through the house or ceiling to reach each room. A multi-head system, with one outdoor unit running several indoor heads, keeps the yard clearer. The trade-off is that every room depends on that one outdoor unit, so we compare it honestly with separate split systems.

    Cottages with a modern extension

Where a cottage has been extended at the back, the switchboard often carries two eras of work: the front rooms on older circuits and the new kitchen and living area on modern ones. Fire Rescue Victoria's summary of the rules says homes built, largely renovated or extended after 1 May 2014 need interconnected, hard-wired smoke alarms on 240-volt mains power with a backup battery. If your extension falls in that window and the alarms aren't linked, our electricians can check what's installed against what's required.

    Heating and cooling in Seddon

A small weatherboard cottage loses heat quickly on a still winter night and gathers it under a tin roof on a hot afternoon. The front rooms were often heated by an open fire or a gas space heater, while a rear extension usually has its own split system. Tight ceiling spaces rule out many ducted layouts, so the practical choices are split systems room by room, a multi-head system, or a floor-standing or bulkhead unit where there's no suitable wall. Ceiling fans help in high-ceilinged front rooms.

    Local notes

    How Seddon's houses are built

The heritage description of the Seddon Residential and Commercial Precinct is small single-storey Edwardian and Victorian houses, mostly detached with some attached, with weatherboard walls dominant and roofs of corrugated iron or unglazed Marseilles-pattern terracotta tile. That construction shapes the work. Old terracotta tiles can crack underfoot, so roof access is planned with care, and we keep cable and pipe runs off the street front wherever another route exists.

Northerly days under a tin roof

The Bureau of Meteorology describes Melbourne as sitting between the hot, dry interior and the cold Southern Ocean, with warm northerly winds often arriving first as a weather system crosses and a cold front able to change conditions within minutes. Its weather station at Laverton, with records back to 1943, averages 27.0 days a year at or above 30 °C and 9.4 at or above 35 °C, mostly from December to February. Under a corrugated iron roof with little insulation, a bedroom can stay hot well into the evening, so we size cooling for those nights as well as the afternoon peak.

Local information and practical answers before you arrange a visit.

Usually yes, though probably not ducted. Wall-mounted split systems on external walls keep pipe runs short, a multi-head system can serve several rooms from one outdoor unit, and a floor-standing unit suits a room without a clear high wall. Where there's crawl space under the floor, it can carry pipes and cable to rooms that have no outside wall. We check the switchboard at the same time, because each new unit needs a circuit.

    • Couldn't be happier with Total Comfort Electrical & Air. I had a few quotes for the same job, but found some were extremely overpriced and others were quite pushy without really explaining why the work needed to be done. Aaron was completely different. He took his time, explained the job in detail, gave me more than one option and made sure I actually understood what I was paying for. He was extremely easy to deal with, did a great job and left everything clean and tidy. His price was competitive and the quality of the work was fantastic. It's honestly great to find a reliable tradesman who you can trust. Would definitely recommend Aaron and Total Comfort Electrical & Air!

    • Aaron was exceptional, I couldn't recommend him highly enough! He recently did some work at our house and was knowledgeable, tidy and genuinely lovely to have around. Our three year old followed him around for practically the entire day, and he was so patient and kind, happily chatting with her while he worked. We're so happy with everything he did and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

    • Fantastic job today. Aaron arrived on time (was accurate in how long it would take), very professional, explaining everything as he went. Gave me extra tips on what to do in the future with my appliances. Best of all, he did a really good job (and really nice bloke). Would highly recommend.

    • Aaron did a great job of replacing a faultilt installed aircon on a 3 story townhouse. This wasn't a straightforward install given the property & there were suspected old leaks and further tests had to be done. He has many years of experience and talks you through it, manages the process and manages the expectations, timing delivery etc of more complex issues. He's really knowledgeable at what he does, and I got a free consult generally on my home and what would increase efficiencies in my home across the board. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, for the attention to detail and care you put into the work.

    • Aaron was super professional, did a fantastic job fixing my switchboard which was left in a complete mess by the solar / battery installers. Also installed an EV Charger, ceiling fans and replaced a split system. He didn't rush any part of the electrical works and was completely thorough and asked where and how I wanted everything installed.
