What the endorsement means
Type A appliances are domestic and light commercial gas appliances, such as space heaters, central heaters and water heaters. The Building and Plumbing Commission, which registers and licenses plumbers and gasfitters in Victoria, says a gasfitter who services gas appliances must be registered or licensed in the specialised class of Type A appliance servicing. A gasfitting licence without that endorsement isn't enough for the rental check, and the check covers every Type A appliance at the property, not only the heater.
How to check
Ask to see the Plumbers Identity Card and look for Gas Servicing Type A. You can also look the practitioner up on the Building and Plumbing Commission's website. Energy Safe Victoria advises using a gasfitter who has completed the carbon monoxide training course run by the Commission and Master Plumbers, since a proper service includes a carbon monoxide spillage test with an analyser.
Why an electrician can't sign it off
An electrical licence doesn't cover gasfitting, and Energy Safe Victoria says it's illegal, and potentially fatal, for unlicensed people to do gasfitting work. The rental electrical check and the gas check are separate jobs with separate records. Our licensed electricians do the electrical check, and the gas check stays with a Type A gasfitter. Booking both for the same week saves the renter two rounds of disruption.
Both checks are due every 2 years. From 13 October 2026, that applies to all rental agreements, whatever date they started.
